TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES
2D/ 3D ECHO Test in Coimbatore
- 2-D echocardiography reveals the heart structures in motion. A cone-shaped image of the heart is displayed on the monitor, presenting a real-time view of its structures. Doctors assess the heart's performance by observing and evaluating each structure using a 2D echo test.
- 3-D echocardiography offers a more detailed perspective of heart structures compared to 2D echoes. It utilizes a live image of the beating heart to obtain precise measurements, enabling an accurate assessment of heart function. Individuals with heart disease can utilize the 3D echo to determine the suitability of their treatment plan based on the heart's anatomy.
Fetal echocardiography
2D ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY
What are the advantages of a 2D echocardiogram?
- Detects heart blood clots.
- Identifies fluid around the heart.
- Determines blockages in the artery caused by fat buildup, atherosclerosis, or an aneurysm.
- Pinpoints issues with the aorta, the primary artery connecting the heart to the body.
- Assesses heart function before valve surgery.
How is a 2D echo test conducted?
During a 2D echo test
- Electrodes, soft and sticky patches, are placed on your chest to monitor the heart's electrical activity.
- Gel is applied on your chest to enhance the conduction of the 2D echo, enabling sonar waves to reach your heart more effectively.
- A handheld device known as a transducer is used to move over the gel-applied area to obtain a clear image of your heart on the screen.
- The computer displays your heart's image on the screen based on the echoes received from the transducer.
- Once the test is finished, the gel is wiped off, and you are good to go.
- A doctor or cardiologist will examine these reports to identify any abnormalities in your heart's function.
Preparation for the 2D echo
- Your doctor may instruct you to refrain from eating for a few hours before the test.
- Ensure to ask your doctor if a treadmill test will be performed alongside the 2D echo and have comfortable running shoes available.
3D ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY
A 3-D echocardiogram creates a three-dimensional image of your heart using either the transoesophageal or transthoracic route. Multiple images are taken from different angles. Echocardiography is performed in children to diagnose or rule out heart disease.
Expectations
Expectations
- A 3D echocardiogram (3D echo) is performed as follows:
- It combines various 2D planes.
- The computer device joins the combined 2D echo plates to create a 3D structure.
- Surface rendering of the combined figure produces an image with height and depth measurements.
Benefits of 3D echo
- Improved visualization of heart structures from different angles
- Accurate assessment of heart function
Importance of this test
- Cardiologists and surgeons value the test results for the following reasons:
- Our labs provide guidance for studying the heart and testing new valves, making 3D echo tests highly useful.
- Before any operation, surgeons examine a unique mitral view to locate valve disease and determine the surgical approach.
- These methods combine different modalities into a comprehensive study, helping cardiologists and surgeons understand the patient's condition considering the heart's various dimensions.
FAQs
An echocardiogram test can be performed to evaluate signs and symptoms of heart disease such as:Â
Atherosclerosis – A gradual obstruction of the arteries by fatty materials or other substances in the bloodstream over a period of years that causes an abnormality of the wall motion or pumping of the heart.
Cardiomyopathy –Â Thickening or weakening of the heart muscle causes enlargement of the heart.
Congenital heart disease –Â Heart structural defects that affect the foetus during its development, including a ventricular septal defect (hole in the center of the heart).
Congestive heart failure –Â Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle has weakened to the point that it cannot pump blood efficiently, causing fluid to accumulate in the blood vessels and lungs, and swelling in the feet, ankles, and other parts of the body.
Valvular heart disease – An abnormality in the flow of blood within the heart due to a malfunction of one or more of the heart valves.
Cardiac tumour –Â A tumour that may develop on the outer surface of the heart, in one or more chambers of the heart (intravaginal), or within the muscular tissue of the heart (myocardium).
Pericarditis-  Inflammation, infection, or swelling of the sac surrounding the heart.

At Dr.Muthus Multispeciality Hospital, we are equipped with world-class technology to perform echocardiogram tests in Coimbatore and other centres with the aim to provide excellent care and services to the patients, ensuring the best possible outcomes.Â
3D echo has advantages over 2DÂ echo. 3DÂ echo provides images from different angles and planes and better visulisation of heart structures when compared to 2D.Â
It generally takes 30 to 60 minutes to perform a 2D Echo test. The duration could be extended if the patient has health issues.
Echocardiogram uses sound waves to evaluate the function of the heart and there is no use of radiation. Hence, it is considered to be safe even for pregnant women. CARE Hospitals has taken extra safety measures and follows all protocols to keep you safe during the Echocardiogram Test. You are welcome to make an appointment before your visit. In order to make your checkup experience as pleasant and safe as possible, our staff will assist you at every step.
The 2D echo test provides information to your doctor about how your heart functions, diagnose any abnormalities and aids in treatment planning if diagnosed with heart disease.Â
